Our Anglican Community
St Bart’s was founded by the Anglican Church in the early 1960’s, at a time when, East Perth had become rundown and industrialised with many people experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough near the Anglican rectory.
Moved by what they saw, Archbishop George Appleton and paediatrician Dr James Watson opened the rectory as a shelter, offering mattresses and simple meals to men in need. Demand quickly grew, with up to 30 men staying each night. In 1965, the shelter was renamed St Bartholomew’s House for Homeless Men, inspired by London’s historic St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

St Bart’s connection to our Anglican Community holds significant meaning and guides us in our values of compassion, collaboration, commitment and curiosity. It is the essence of our past and future.
