St Bart’s is pleased to announce that it has been awarded funding for a new specialist Homeless Aged Care facility in East Perth.
The 80-bed aged care facility has been made possible thanks to a $30 million contribution by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
Samantha Drury, Chief Executive Officer of St Bart’s, said “We are extremely honoured to deliver a new residential aged care facility in East Perth that will provide a home and care for 80 of our community’s most vulnerable”
Construction of “The St Bart’s on Brown (Aged Care)” specialist homeless aged care facility is expected to commence early next year, with demolition on the site currently in progress. St Bart’s is anticipating the new service will open early in 2028.
The new 7 storey, 80-bed aged care facility will expand St Bart’s current male-only service to include both women and men for the first time. Once complete, it will provide person-centred care for older West Australians with complex needs and a history of homelessness.
“St Bart’s on Brown (Aged Care)” will be dedicated to older women and men who have experienced, or are at risk of, homelessness. Unlike traditional aged care, which reserves only a small percentage of places for vulnerable people, St Bart’s will provide 100 per cent of its beds to those in greatest need. Many of our residents face premature ageing and complex health issues because of their experience of homelessness and this development will ensure they receive the specialised care and dignity they deserve” explains Mrs Drury.
Following initial collaboration with an Aboriginal reference group, the new facility has been designed with trauma-informed and dementia-friendly features, offering safe and culturally inclusive spaces for residents who have faced significant challenges in their lives. St Bart’s will provide round-the-clock care that ensures health, wellbeing, and quality of life, enabling residents to stabilise and thrive.
Mel Ashton, Chair of St Bart’s said “St Bart’s is proud to be part of a national effort to support aged care services in areas where they are needed most, and we commend the Australian Government for recognising the importance of investing in the new East Perth development. We look forward to delivering these much-needed aged care services”.
